Ao Parlai Seafood restaurant isn't the largest beachfront restaurant on Chalong Bay, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in prompt efficient service and delicious inexpensive food. The owner keeps a good selection of live seafood, in aerated tanks, for diners to choose their personal favourites, and the early morning markets supply other fresh seafood, vegetables and fruit.
With around 80 tables the restaurant isn't really small but it does have a casual and intimate feel to it. The nicest tables are out in the open spaces, on the sand and under the stars. Large shade trees, lovely orchids and ferns surround the tables providing privacy and great atmosphere. At high tide the water is lapping at the sea wall and only a few meters away from you.
A few local fishermen use this beach to moor their boats, so you will probably see these beautifully decorated, timber long tail boats, bobbing on their moorings. The setting sun, Islands, calm waters, colourful boats, mountains as a backdrop combine in post card perfect scenery. If you prefer you can dine undercover in the roofed section but still be only meters away from the ocean and views.
Largely unknown by foreigners, Ao Parlai restaurant is now becoming more popular with foreign residents who live in the Chalong area, hence the introduction of an English language menu. Unfortunately, tourists rarely get to enjoy this restaurant as they are usually herded to the bigger places who may offer incentives to the tour bus, mini van and taxi service operators, who take guests there.
The food is authentic Thai, featuring fresh seafood of all descriptions. For a different taste there are many Thai salads, vegetable dishes, soups, various pork and chicken meals and delicious Thai deserts if you still have room. The prices are extremely reasonable and only a fraction of the cost for the same meals in the main tourist area of Patong. Here the prices are fair and geared for the local Thai families.
There will always be a table available so no need to book, you will find Ao Parlai Seafood Restaurant in The Chalong area. Off Choafa west road, head down Soi Parlai past the Phuket Zoo. Take the very well sign posted road on the left and a few meters down the road you will come to the Ao Parlai Restaurant on the right. Follow the dirt road to the end.
